Lot No. 102

Theodor Zacharias Alt

(Döhlau/Hof, Oberfranken 1846–1937 Ansbach) In the Studio, circa 1876, signed Th. Alt, oil on canvas, 68 x 40.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

This painting enjoys an exceptional position in Theodor Alt’s overall oeuvre. From a pictorial perspective, it stands out with the loose “alla prima” manner of its brush strokes which give the impression of great spontaneity and which Alt uses to apparently effortlessly captures the weak light falling in from the left. His broken colours over a base of black or grey lend the composition a noble coolness whose balance has the effect of allowing the numerous props to meld together, forming a harmonious whole.
