Rudolf Ernst

Provenance: 606th Art Auction, Dorotheum Vienna, 3rd December 1974, no. 46, plate 108. Rudolf Ernst Son of the architect Leopold Ernst. He was a pupil at the Vienna Academy under Anselm Feuerbach. After finishing his studies he moved to Paris where he exhibited regularly at the Paris salon, initially with portraits and genre paintings. He also created decorative, large format paintings for Parisian society and worked at first as a lithographer and etcher. From 1885 onwards he exclusively painted pictures of the orient, usually interiors. He undertook several journeys to study in southern Spain, Morocco and Turkey with the result that his paintings repeatedly showed decorative architectural and artistic elements typical of these countries. He retained his style of painting and oriental themes until his death.
