Remigius Adrianus van Haanen Landscapes painter and etcher. Initially a pupil of his father in Utrecht and at the local Academy, afterwards with the animal painter J. van Ravensway in Hilversum. After eighteen months in Amsterdam he spent years travelling, on the Rhine, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich. In 1837 van Haanen settled in Vienna from where he travelled to almost every European country. He spent the years from 1852 to 1854 in Russia. He painted in the style of the Old Masters and was particularly well known for his winter landscapes. Van Haanen was a member of the academies in Amsterdam, St. Petersburg, Milan, Venice and Vienna. His works can be found in museums in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Vienna, Brno, Prague, Mainz, Danzig and Florence.
