Johann Nepomuk Hoechle


(Munich 1790–1835 Vienna) Emperor Francis I. in Baden near Vienna, Inspecting the 8th Regiment of Hussars, General of the Cavalry Duke Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg, and Accepting the Report of the Commander, Colonel Count Vinzenz Esterházy, oil on canvas, 55 x 71 cm, framed, (GS)

Provenance: Dorotheum Auction, Vienna, 16th March 1976, lot 76; Private German collection Painted around 1832, this is one of Hoechle’s major works. Hoechle began his career as a pupil of Ferdinand Kobell in Munich. Later he moved to Vienna where he studied at the Academy between 1804 and 1808 under Füger and Wutky. He turned to the painting of battles and enjoyed great success with this genre. He repeatedly accompanied the Emperor on manoeuvres. Using the sketches he drew whilst in the field he created his military scenes, many in large format.
