Eduard Agricola

(Stuttgart 1800-after 1872 Munich) View of the Entrance to the Harbour at Livorno, signed and dated Ed. Agricola 1830 (?) , oil on canvas, 62 x 89 cm, framed, (W)

Eduard Agricola: The artist received his first training at the Berlin Academy, studying there from 1818 to 1826. After his studies he lived in Salzburg until 1830. This was followed by sojourns in Berlin and Munich to study, as well as his preferred journeys to Naples and Rome. Whereas his earlier paintings were dominated by alpine landscapes, he now painted Italian scenes of ruins, seascapes, coastal landscapes and waterfalls. During the 1840’s Agricola received many commissions from Prince Karl and Prince Albrecht of Prussia and returned to Germany. During this period he painted scenes of the countryside in south and north Germany.
