A Franciscan of patrician origins (he was the son of a local doctor), Clement XIV, whose pontificate coincided with the abolition of the Jesuit order, interrupted the long succession of popes coming from distinguished Italian noble families. The "Pfaffenspiegel" says about him: "Among the 200 popes, Clement XIV was the best… Whenever possible, he used papal power for the most benevolent purposes, and his philanthropy and charitableness were unlimited…"
