Lot No. 2 #

Lucas Cranach the Elder

(Kronach 1472–1553 Weimar) Emperor Ferdinand I., woodcut, 21.3 x 14.3 cm, inscribed by another hand with pen and brown ink „Lucas Cranach sculpsit“ at lower right margin, mounted, unframed, Bartsch 129, (Sch)

An extraordinary fine copy without the cracks in the margin lines, in the plumed hat or in the eagle escutcheon as described in Bartsch (vol. 11, ill. p. 422); with the watermark of a crowned double eagle and the coat of arms of Kaufbeuren (different from the one in Briquet and Meder), trimmed outside and along margin lines. Ferdinand I (1503–1564), the younger brother of Charles V., was king of Germany from 1556 onwards until his death. His coat of arms shows only one eagle instead of two, which may point to the fact that Ferdinand at the time of the execution of the portrait was not yet Emperor. The other coat of arms represents Hungary and Bohemia which were also ruled by Ferdinand. The execution of the portrait may therefore point to 1556.
