The present painting is probably related to Rubens’s painting Saint Ambrose Refusing Emperor Theodosius Entrance to the Cathedral of Milan now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. A comparable head study by Rubens of Saint Ambrose is in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. Compare also the copy by Van Dyck based on a composition by Rubens in the National Gallery, London.
