This elegant portrait excellently exemplifies the quality of the rare works by William Bell. In 1771, Sir Joshua Reynolds honoured the artist at the Royal Academy with the gold medal for the best history painting. Bell did not live in London, but at Seaton Delaval Hall, Northumberland, the estate of Lord Delaval. Later on, he settled in Newcastle, where he came into contact with the Langlands family of famous silversmiths. The sitter of the present painting, John Langlands II, was to run his father’s business until his death in 1804. Here Bell has depicted him as a young gentleman, with the attributes of a horse (pony) and hound.
