Anthonius Leemans
(The Hague 1631–before 1673 Amsterdam)
Still Life with suspended Hunting Utensils,
signed at upper left: A. Leemans/F.,
oil on panel, 65 x 46 cm, framed
Provenance:
with Rafael Valls, London
Anthonius Leemans, probably a brother of the painter Johannes Leemans, specialised in trompe-l’oeil still lifes of hunting utensils or musical instruments. The artist has arranged the paraphernalia needed for hunting in the form of a relief. The illusion of real objects on a real wall is augmented through a skilful treatment of light and shade and the employment of the principles of perspective.
