Peeter van Bredael

(Antwerp 1629–1719)
Market Scene with ruins,
signed and dated at lower right: P. v Bredael/1670,
oil on canvas, 120 x 198 cm, unframed

Provenance:
South German private collection

Peeter van Bredael began his career as a student of David Ryckaert III. After his training, he sojourned in Spain for an extensive period of time. Although there is no proof that he actually stayed in Italy, he painted primarily Italian landscapes featuring ruins, markets, and military engagements. His compositions can be compared to the richly populated landscapes by Jan Brueghel I. Comparable paintings by Bredael are, among other places, preserved in the Musée Municipal in Châlons-sur-Marne and in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille.
