Pieter Casteels III

(Antwerp 1684–1749 Richmond)
Still life of flowers,
fragments of a signature at lower centre,
oil on canvas, 81.9 x 110.5 cm, carved and gilded 18th-century frame

Pieter Casteels was born into a family of artists in Antwerp and eventually became its most prominent member. After his arrival in England he specialized in decorative arrangements of flowers, fruit, and animals, holding a leading position in this genre in early Georgian London after the death of Jacob Bogdany. His elegant and highly decorative oeuvre betrays a distinct influence from Verbruggen and Jan van Huysum.
