North Italian School, 16th Century
Saint George,
oil on panel, 112.5 x 69.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
Austrian private collection
The present painting, which was traditionally attributed to Sodoma, shows similarities to the polyptych representing Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, executed by Vincenzo Civerchio, Francesco Napoletano and colloborators (Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, Brescia). Especially the panel of the left side wing depicting Saint Sebastian which is attributed to Francesco Napoletano, is comparable to the figure of Saint George in the present painting.
We are grateful to Dr. Vilmos Tatrai for his help in cataloguing the present painting.
