Hondecoeter, who resided in the Northern Netherlands, nevertheless continued to work in the landscape manner of his native region in Flanders throughout his life. His art was mainly informed by Gillis van Coninxloo, Roelandt Savery, and David Vinckboons. The present work, with its elegant composition and delicately rendered scenery, also defies the artist’s Flemish origins.
