We are grateful to Professor Marco Ciampolini for confirming the attribution of the present work on the basis of a digital photograph.
A similar tondo by Riccio is in the Chigi Saracini Collection in Siena (see Da Sodoma a Marco Pino. Pittori a Siena nella prima metà del Cinquecento, ed. by F. Sricchia Santoro, Florence 1988, cat.no. 39, plate 55).
The present composition may also be compared to the Madonna with Child, Saint Joseph, John the Baptist as a Boy and an Angel, as well as in the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine and Saint Hieronymus, also in the Chigi Saracini Collection in Siena (ibidem, cat.no. 43, plate 59 and cat.no. 38, plate 54).
