We are grateful to M. Stéphane Perreau and M. Jean Jacques Petit, Paris, who have identified this painting as an authentic work by the artist.
Levrac-Tournières was accepted into the workshop of Bon de Boullognes in 1685, and he went on shortly afterwards to work for Hyacinthe Rigaud. In 1701 he was accepted by the Académie Royale with his portrait of Michel Corneilles (today in the Palace of Versailles); from 1724 he was a professor there. The rather hetetogeneous character of his work is typical of the artists of the transitional period of the Regency. In contrast to the Baroque Louis XIV period, represented by Rigaud, he lent his work the more intimate character gained from the use of certain stylistic elements drawn from Dutch painting, whilst his light palette anticipated to a certain degree the frothy painting of the Rococo. He was one of the most successful portraitists of his time. The elegance of his compositions and the brilliance of his draperies, well received by contemporary critics, are also apparent in our painting.
