A comparable sous-bois still life by Hamilton was auctioned at Sotheby’s, New York, on 27.1.1999 as lot 158. Hamilton was an extremely successful animal and still life painter in the employ of the Imperial Viennese court. He also worked for the Princes of Liechtenstein and Schwarzenberg. His main motifs, however, were portraits of horses and dogs, and depictions of riding schools.
