Justus Juncker

Justus Juncker leraned his craft from the Frankfurt façade painter, Johann Hugo Schlegel, whilst at the same time educating himself in the Frankfurt cabinet of Baron von Haeckel, who owned an important collection of Netherlandish painting of the 17th century. Juncker executed portraits at first and genre scenes in the style of David Teniers the Younger. Around 1745 he would go on to concentrate primarily on still lifes, modelling his art on the works of Jan Davidsz. de Heem whom he much admired. His true talent, however, lay in the depiction of interiors in the Dutch style. In these pictures he combined technical perfection and a brilliant use of colour with the traditions of the great Dutch painters of the 17th century.
