Trautmann’s oeuvre is extremely varied. It encompasses historical, religious pieces, character heads and studies in the style of Netherlandish tronies, a few portraits and genre scenes of the most various kind. One of his specialities was conflagrations by night and gypsy or robber groups around a camp fire, in which the painter developed impressive lighting effects. Trautmann’s style was as varied as his subject matter: here he draws on various influences in Dutch and Flemish art, as well as 17th-century German painting.
