Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, Il Morazzone
(Morazzone 1573–1625/6)
The Holy Family,
oil on canvas, 27 x 20 cm, unframed
This painting, which is presumed to be a sketch for a Madonna and Child in a niche, exhibits, according to M. Rosci the typical characteristics of die Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli’s style. These include the Neo-Raphaelesque clarity of the Madonna in profile, reminiscent of the ‘Adoration of the Kings’ (Ambrosiana, Milan). The fall of light around the head of St. Joseph echoes that in a drawing of the ‘Adoration of the Shepherds’ (Hermitage, St. Petersburg). The design of the vase of flowers is also of a high artistic standard, and may be found in numerous other works by the artist.
