After studying under Aureliano Milani, Giuseppe Marchesi entered the workshop of Marcantonio Franceschini, whose fine classicising style had a major influence on the development of the artist’s work. Marchesi was one of the most important painters in Bologna in the mid-18th century. He was an active member of the Accademia Clementina, founded by Franceschini. His work was appreciated above all by British patrons, many examples of which are now in British private collections.
