Circle of François Boucher
(Paris 1703–1770)
A young woman sleeping,
oil on canvas, 37.7 x 45 cm, framed
According to Alastair Laing, this painting is the best of all known variants of a drawing, which has repeatedly been attributed to Boucher or Fragonard. Alastair Laing is convinced that the drawing is by Boucher. It is interesting that the picture shows a cord entwined around drapery in the upper part of the image, which Boucher would later include in his famous work, “Sleeping Venus and Cupid” (formerly in the collection of Antoine La Rocque), although it does not appear in the drawing. This might indicated that there was a second, now missing, composition featuring this subject matter, on which our work is based. Nonetheless, it documents the development of the composition from the drawing stage to the motif as subsequently used. The high standard of this picture speaks in favour of its execution in the workshop of Boucher. An attribution to Jean-Baptiste Marie Huet is also possible.
