Michel Bouillon

(Ere 1638–1673 Tournai)
A floral wreath encompassing a relief of the Madonna and Child,
verso details of the provenance,
oil on panel, 53.6 x 73.4 cm, framed

Provenance:
from Belgian aristocratic ownership.

We are grateful to Dr Claudia Salvi, Paris, who has confirmed the authenticity of this painting as a work by Michel Bouillon. A comprehensive certificate is available.

Little is known about the life of Michel Bouillon, who is considered to be one of the most important still life painters of the “Grand Siècle” outside Paris. Trained by his father, Jean Bouillon, who was also the master of Philippe de Champaigne, he is first documented as a mastercraftsman at the Guild of Saint Luke in Tournai in 1638. The only royal commission awarded to the artist was for ephemeral decorative paintings for the occasion of the triumphal procession into Tournai by Louis XIV. Otherwise he worked almost exclusively on small pictures for private patrons. Bouillon reworked elements drawn from Dutch painting, often combining still lifes with flowers and fruit with architectural motifs.
