We are grateful to Prof Nicola Spinosa for confirming the authenticity of this painting, having examined it in the original (written communication dated 7.6.2008).
The painting, as yet unpublished, has been dated by Prof Spinosa to the period circa 1625/28. It is associated with other paintings by Battistello from this period, such as the Death of Abel (Rome, private collection), St. John the Baptist (Philadelphia, private collection) and particularly the Calling of St. Matthew (formerly London, Matthiesen), for whom the same young man presumably stood as model for the artist as in this painting. The composition is remarkable for its powerful naturalism and is closely linked to the paintings of apostles and philosophers by Ribera dating from the period circa 1615.
