John Vanderbank the Younger was a pupil of Gottfried Kneller and one of the co-founders of the St. Martin’s Lane Academy. Amongst his best known works is a portrait of Queen Caroline, now in the collection of the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, Goodwood House, Sussex. Francis Bacon, knighted in 1603, from 1618 Baron Verulam and from 1621 Viscount St. Albans, was famous both as a politician (Lord Chancellor) and as a philosopher and scientist. The introduction of the term, empiricism, to the sciences stems from his ideas.
