Provenance:
from Austrian aristocratic ownership.
We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, who has confirmed this painting as an authentic, albeit late, work by van Thielen, having examined it in photographic form. The style of the signature is characteristic of the artist. A painter of flowers, Jan Philips van Thielen started his career as a pupil of Theodor Rombout and Daniel Seghers. His floral garlands betray the influence of the latter. In many cases, the figural elements in his pictures were painted by his brother-in-law, Erasmus Quellinus.
