Jan Brueghel II
(Antwerp 1601–1678)
The Holy Family encompassed by a garland of flowers,
oil on panel, 115 x 95 cm, framed,
There is a comprehensive certificate to accompany this painting by Dr Klaus Ertz. The Holy Family is depicted in an unframed octagon encompassed by a magnificent floral wreath, which Jan Brueghel II executed in fine glazes with the great technical virtuosity for which he was famous. The jewel-like multi-colours of the floral garland sing out strongly against the black monochrome background. The figural details are finely rendered, and the sculptural depth of the individual elements of the composition is impressive. The exuberant floral wreath, glowing against the dark backdrop, was counterposed by a representation of the Holy Family by an as yet unknown member of the Francken workshop. The image thus stands fully in the great Antwerp tradition. Some of the flowers in the surrounding wreath make iconographical reference to the central medallion. The picture is an important document of Brueghel’s collaboration with his painter colleagues at the height of Antwerp’s artistic flourishing.
