Attributed to Pedro de Rubiales

Attributed to Pedro de Rubiales - Old Master Paintings

(active in Rome and Naples between 1520 and 1580)
St. John the Baptist in a landscape,
oil on canvas, 107 x 66 cm, framed

We are grateful to Prof Pierluigi Leone de Castris, who was able to confirm the attribution of this painting to Pedro de Rubiales on examination of a photograph. We would also like to thank Prof Gonzalo Redin Michaus, who suggested that the picture might be attributed to the workshop of von Rubiales.

The Spanish painter, Pedro de Rubiales, who was active in Rome and Naples (being documented there between 1548 and 1556), reworked the Mannerist tendencies of his Italian contemporaries in his work. Vasari mentions the painter as one of his assistants when commissioned by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese to paint the Room of a Hundred Days at the Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome.
