Christoph Jacobsz. van der Lamen

Christoph Jacobsz. van der Lamen - Old Master Paintings

(Brussels circa 1606–1651 Antwerp)
An elegant party dining in the open air,
oil on panel, 58.7 x 84.3 cm, framed

Christoffel van der Lamen specialised in the depiction of groups of courtiers. He was trained by his father and in the studio of Frans Francken II, to whom he appears to be indebted in terms of his compositions. He enrolled in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke along with his apprentice, Hieronymus Janssens in 1636/37. Upon his death in 1651, death duties were paid to the Guild of Saint Luke. He was influenced by Frans Francken II, but he was inspired above all by Peter Paul Rubens’s gardens of love scenes. His courtly groups are generally organised in a semi-circle around a richly apppointed banqueting table. In general, his compositions feature a figure with its back to the viewer in the foreground, which almost stands as the artist’s signature. This painting is a good example of the mature style of van der Lamen.
