Bunnik, who trained under Herman Saftleven and Gerard Hoet, was one of the most talented Dutch landscape painters of his time. He travelled to Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy. In Rome he joined the Dutch Schilderbent group, where he was nicknamed “Ketelroom” (kettledrum). He would later become court painter to the Duke of Modena. The coat-of-arms of employer adorns the baggage train in the foreground of this painting. In 1684 Bunnik returned to Utrecht. Aside from its decorative effect, the narrative nature of this painting is particularly noteworthy.
