Elias Vonck
(Amsterdam 1605–1652)
Still life with game,
signed lower right: E. Vonck,
oil on canvas, 84 x 120 cm, framed
In the Lexikon der holländischen Still lifemaler im 17. Jahrhundert it states, “Elias Vonck is considered to be one of the first still life painters to specialise in the representation of dead birds. Aside from song birds, partridges and a swan, the artist also chose the motif of a dead rabbit draped around a table platter in his hunting still lifes or hung up by its legs as evidence of a kill. Vonck’s paintings are structured diagonally in the main, the bodies of the animals lit against a dark ground. The monotone brown-grey tones of the pictures are enlivened by the white of the fur and the underside of the feathers of these creatures. This contrast between light and dark draws the gaze of the viewer to the formal structure of the bodies, which Vonck sets off against one another in a sophisticated play of pictorial space and plane. Elias Vonck was the father of the still life painter, Jan Vonck.”
