Josse de Momper was one of the most important Flemish landscape painters of the transitional period from Mannerism to a more realistic Naturalism. His mountain landscapes framed with rocks offer views of yellowy-green valleys and plains in the middle ground with powerful blue backgrounds. They are characterised by the clarity and intensity of their coloration. The figural groups in his paintings are often by Jan Brueghel the Elder, Frans Francken II, Sebastiaen Vrancx, Hendrick van Balen, Pieter Snayers or David Teniers II.
