Herman van der Mijn was a pupil of Ernst Stuven. In 1712 he moved from Amsterdam to Antwerp and a year later to Düsseldorf, where he became court painter to Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate. After the latter’s death, he moved back to Antwerp, moving on from there to Paris, where the Duke of Orléans became his patron. In 1721 van der Mijn moved to London. He quickly became a successful portrait painter with a thriving workshop.
