(Schloß Saar 1864–1946 Vienna) Hagar and Ismael in the Desert, signed, inscribed and dated Jos. Straka Wien 1888, on the reverse inscribed on the stretcher, oil on canvas, 96.5 x 145 cm, framed, (Rei)
The Old Testament story tells of the slave woman Hagar and her son Ismael. Abraham and his wife Sara remained childless at first, and so Hagar bore Abraham a son. Fourteen years later Sara also gave birth to a son, Isaac. Sara did not wish both sons to inherit, therefore Abraham sent Hagar and Ismael into the desert. As they come to the end of their provisions, an angel shows them a life-saving spring.
