Carl Morgenstern
(Frankfurt am Main 1811–1893) View of Frankfurt am Main, signed, dated C. Morgenstern 13. Febr. 1872, oil on canvas, 28.5 x 42 cm, framed, (Rei)
Compare: Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, vol. II, 1, p. 78, no. 23
Carl Morgenstern was the scion of a Frankfurt family of artists. As was normal for the family, his artistic training began with his father. In 1832 he left for Munich and became a pupil of the landscape painter Carl Rottmann. A three-year journey to Italy followed, its landscapes subsequently reflected in his paintings. Despite many trips abroad, to Holland as well as France, he always remained true to his home city. The view of Frankfurt in the present lot shows the Kaiserdom which was partially destroyed by fire in 1867.
