Max Clarenbach *

Max Clarenbach * - 19th Century Paintings

(Neuß 1880–1952) A Winter’s Day on the Erft, signed M. Clarenbach, oil on canvas, 60.5 x 80.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Max Clarenbach The artist studied at the Düsseldorf Academy from a very young age, under Heinrich Lauenstein and Arthur Kampf. He attended Eugen Dücker’s landscape class from 1897 onwards and this was to have a significant influence on Clarenbach’s work. From this point onwards it would be the views of the sea, river and harbours in tonal colours, as well as his characteristically strong brushstrokes, which would define the artist’s oeuvre. After travelling to Paris in 1907/08, Clarenbach’s palette of colours became stronger and their application lighter. The influence of Impressionism also became apparent in his choice of motif. During this period he executed a series of garden and flower paintings. In the 1920s, after this stylistic foray, he returned to his earlier scenes, the woodland and river landscapes of his homeland. His many and diverse views of the Lower Rhine region remain associated with his name to this day. (cf. Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule, vol. 1, Munich 1997, p. 235ff.)
