The German painter Wilhelm Kray studied portrait and landscape painting at the Berlin Academy. This was followed by travels to Paris and Italy where he resided. He also lived in Vienna for several years, finally returning to Germany. Kray’s paintings depict nymphs, mythological scenes and the lives of the rural Italian population, as well as romantic scenes.
