Wilhelm Marc
entered the Academy in Munich in 1863 after finishing his law studies. He made many journeys to Italy with the painter Erich Correns, who was his teacher and friend. At the beginning of his career Marc painted in the style of Hans Makart before dedicating himself to genre painting in a rustic setting. His work takes as its focus country folk in their rural surroundings; his depictions of children in particular are executed with great sensitivity. Marc’s oeuvre is of the tradition of Deffregger or Diez. (Cf. Münchner Maler im 19. Jahrhundert, Vol. 3, p. 107f.)
