Lot No. 48

Wouter Verschuur Sr.

(Amsterdam 1812–1874 Vorden) Interior with Dogs, View of a Pergola, signed W. Verschuur, oil on panel, 34.2 x 45.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Wouter Verschuur
studied with the landscape and animal painter Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776–1839) and Cornelius Steffelaar (1797–1861), amongst others. His talent was recognised at an early age and he was a member of Amsterdam’s Akademie voor Beeldende Kunsten and the Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut from 1833. He lived and worked in Amsterdam as well as The Hague, Brussels and Haarlem. Although chiefly residing in the Netherlands, he made a name for himself abroad. His paintings were particularly popular with customers in France, one of his paintings being purchased by Napoleon III at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855. Verschuur specialised in stable interiors and landscapes. Boths, horses and particularly dogs were a favourite subject. Verschuur belongs to the last generation of Dutch Romantics, strongly oriented towards the works of 17th century artists. In Verschuur’s case, it was the oeuvre of animal and battle painter Philip Wouwerman which had the greatest influence on his work.
