Schloss Hainfeld near Feldbach, property of Josef von Hammer-Purgstall, founder of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, renowned orientalist and diplomat, Hammer-Purgstall Gesellschaft, Vienna.

Wilhelm August Rieder
His talent was recognised at an early age so that he was studying with Hubert Maurer at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste by the age of 16. Many wealthy patrons supported the young Rieder. Whilst still studying at the academy he met Franz Schubert, placing his piano at the composer’s disposal. His famous portrait of Schubert was executed in 1825, showing the composer sitting on a stool and wearing glasses.
