Max Klinger - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Leipzig 1857-1920 Groß-Jena) Klinger-Album. Selection of 30 main sheets from the original plates, printed on Japan paper, edited by Johannes Hartmann and Felix Becker, Leipzig, Klingerhaus 1925, an album with 30 original prints (mostly etchings and aquatint) on Japan paper, each signed Max Klinger in the plate or below the depiction, each monogrammed MK on the mount or titled below the depiction, with a title page in black and red and an imprint, with a foreword by Felix Ecker, a table of contents and a text comprising twelve pages with an elaborate description of each print. In the original violet linen portfolio with gilded title cartouche and patterned paste paper covering, various dimensions of sheets, all mounted, each 62,7 x 47,2 cm, album 65 x 50 x 5 cm, No. 9 of 250 numbered copies, (Sch)

Johannes Hartmann und Felix Becker, the two editors of the album were long lasting friends of Klinger. They used the original plates of the artist and had them printed like Klinger himself at the print shops Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig and Otto Felsing in Berlin. The sheets of the following series are existant: Rescues from Ovid’s victims (Dedication - Narcissus and Echo), Eve and the future (Eve – First Future – the Snake - Adam), The glove (yearnings - abduction), A Life (The seduction - Abandoned – The Rivals – Christ and the Sinner), Dramas (In Flagranti – A Mother III), A Love (Dedication – First Encounter – At the Gate – In the Park - Happiness - Awakening), On Death I (Herodes – On the Tracks – Death as Redeemer), On Death II (The Philosopher - Misery – Dead Mother – To Beauty) and the single sheets "The Menzel sheet", "Rising from the foam of the sea" and "Yearning". All prints are in a very good state of preservation. The linen album with traces of wear is somewhat soiled. Very rare copy with beautiful prints of the complete selection of etchings by Klinger from the edition of Leipzig 1925.
