Schneider Jr., dated March 1983. “This wonderfully preserved painting, an unusually large format for Morgenstern, is in effect a summary, an idealised form of the landscape around Lake Como. Morgenstern bases the painting on a view with Varenna to the north. However, he idealises the foreground and decorates the mountains with an imaginary castle. In terms of the beauty of the scene, the ideal lighting and extremely careful execution, this painting is one of Carl Morgenstern’s most important works.”
