Literature: see H. U. Beck, Künstler um Jan van Goyen, vol. I, p. 51. This painting is the third signed painting known to be by the extremely rare work by the pupil of van Goyen, van den Bos, whose biography has yet to be researched. A very similar painting forms part of the Baron Brukenthal Collection in Hermannstadt (Sibiu), Rumania.
We are grateful to Marijke de Kinkelder of the RKD, The Hague, for confirming this painting as an autograph work by the seldom seen Van Goyen-follower, V. van den Bos. She has brought together a small group of works by this artist.
