Provenance: Belgian private collection.

A second version of this composition, but without insects, was formerly held in a private German collection (see Marie Louise Hairs, Les Peintres Flamands de Fleurs, Bruxelles 1985, p. 283, ill. 90). Ykens began his career as the pupil of his uncle, Osias Beert. In 1630/31 he was appointed master of the Antwerp St. Lucas guild. After 1665 he settled in Brussels. Ykens produced still lifes, which take their lead from the works of Daniel Seghers, garlands of flowers and medallions surrounded by wreaths with religious scenes. On occasion he would collaborate with figure painters, such as Pieter van Avont and T. Willeboirts Bosschaert.
