Lot No. 225

Paolo Piazza, called Fra Cosimo (

Castelfranco Veneto 1560–1620 Venice) Susannah and the Elders, oil on canvas, 98 x 76 cm, framed,

Certificate: Prof. Ugo Ruggeri, Venice. Professor Ruggeri compares this picture with Piazza's “The ordination as a bishop of St. Nicolas von Myrrha” in the cathedral of Castelfranco Veneto, and with his “Holy Family” in the Museum of Bob Jones University, Greenville/South Carolina. In all three works he sees commonality in the stylistic elements, such as the definition of the heads and the small mouths of the figures. Paolo Piazza, who entered a Capucin order in 1597, was a pupil of Palma Giovane, and perhaps also of Veronese. He worked not only in Venice, but in Parma, Reggio Emilia and Rome (where he decorated several rooms for Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the Palazzo Borghese). His many travels took him to Bohemia, Austria, Bavaria and the Tyrol. The Venetian influences from the work of Palma Giovane and Bassano combine in Piazza's works with elements of the Roman painting of this time drawn from the works of Carlo Saraceni.
