Provenance: Belgian private collection.

We are grateful to Drs. Jan Kosten of the RKD, The Hague, who has confirmed that this painting is an authentic work by Gaspar de Crayer. He compares it with two further variants of this subject, which are both to be found in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Gaspar de Crayer was a gifted and productive history and portrait painter from the Rubens school. He specialised in large figural compositions in the spirit of the early Antwerper Baroque.
