Lot No. 42

Sebastiano Bombelli

(Udine 1635–1719 Venice) Portrait of a Venetian procurator, oil on canvas, 119.4 x 91.4 cm, framed,

We are grateful to Professor Ugo Ruggeri, Venice, who has identified the present painting as an autograph work by Bombelli (certificate, January 2010). Following his apprenticeship in Udine, Bombelli received his further training in Guercino‘s workshop in Bologna. He was influenced by his master‘s mature style. In his portraits, however, Bombelli also made borrowings from works by Justus Sustermans, so that he can be assumed to have sojourned in Venice, which is also attested to by the portrait of Francesco de‘ Medici in the Vienna Belvedere. His portraits of Venetian patricians are considered the most important works of that genre in Venetian Late Baroque. It is particularly their colouring that betrays the legacy of the Venetian tradition, which the artist amalgamated with contemporary European official portraiture.
