Provenance: presumably auctioned by Hawkins, London, 11 May 1896; presumably auctioned by Earl Grey, London, 31 May 1902; sale, Arthur Grenfell, 26 June 1914, no. 17; sale, Lempertz, Cologne, 5-7 June 1975, lot 83 (as Jan van Huysum); European private collection.

Literature: C. Hofstede de Groot, Beschreibendes und kritisches Verzeichnis der Werke der hervorragendsten holländischen Maler des XVII. Jahrhunderts, Paris and Stuttgart, 1923, vol. X, no. 103, p. 316, (as Jan van Huysum); M. H. Grant, Jan van Huysum, including a catalogue raisonné of the still lifes of fruit and flowers, Leigh on Sea 1954, no. 64, p. 22 (as Jan van Huysum).

The present painting, which bears the inscription Jan van Huysum, has traditionally been regarded as an autograph work by the artist (see Literature). We are grateful to Fred Meijer, Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD), for suggesting the attribution to Justus van Huysum on the basis of a photograph.
