Willem Koekkoek

(Amsterdam 1839–1890) Canal in Amsterdam with a View of the “Rembrandthuis”, monogrammed W.K., oil on canvas, 56 x 86 cm, framed, craquelure, (GS)

Willem Koekkoek: Willem was a member of the famous Koekkoek artistic dynasty which produced no less than 14 recognised artists over 3 generations. Together with his brother, Willem received his first artistic instruction from his father, Hermann. As well as landscapes, Koekkoek dedicated himself almost entirely to the painting of architectural views which were characterised, above all, by his particular treatment of the play of light and shadow. Willem Koekkoek was mainly active in Amsterdam but he sojourned frequently in London. As a result, most collectors of his work were based in London. However, he also successfully submitted to the first International Art Exhibition in Vienna’s Künstlerhaus and to the Glaspalast in Munich.
