(Stuttgart 1800 - after 1872 Munich) View of the Entrance to the Harbour at Livorno, signed and dated Ed. Agricola 1830 (?), oil on canvas, 62 x 89 cm, framed, (W)

Eduard Agricola: The artist received his first artistic education at the Berlin Academy where he studied from 1818-1826. After his studies he lived in Salzburg until 1830. This was followed by study trips to Berlin and Munich although he preferred travelling to Naples and Rome. His earlier paintings were characterised by alpine landscapes but these gave way to ruins, seascapes, coastal scenes and Italian waterfalls. During the 1840’s Agricola received numerous commissions from Prince Karl and Prince Albrecht of Prussia and settled again in Germany. During this period he painted works depicting the landscapes of both southern and northern Germany.
